Chronology
In the winter of 1862, during the Civil War, the US
Army sends a company of volunteers to scout the uncharted territories of the West. Minervini built the set in Montana, then let the cast live there for two months.
"Roberto Minervini’s new film" Who???
The dialogue and thoughts expressed are what the actors made up while living in the wilderness imagining themselves as soldiers in the Civil War. Not that anyone has ever heard of him or seen his other boring films.
Like, "Have you ever shot anyone?" "Yes, a rabbit" Really deep and philosophical
Although the Civil War was fought between the North and the South, for some very stupid reasons some Northern soldiers are sent out West to "scout unknown territories" because apparently the North has soldiers to spend doing something absolutely useless for the war effort. Throughout all the boring movies these soldiers wander around, camp out, and say a lot of boring nonsense.
Nothing else happens
Of course. These “soldiers” never act like real soldiers during the civil war and never talk like them.
Or watch any Spaghetti Western from the 70s
To get an idea of ββwhat it means, I recommend the fantastic Ken Burns documentary. Even “Django Vs Space-Zombies” is more realistic (and also a lot funnier) than this garbage.
